The Narrow Gate

“For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

The Narrow Gate • Wednesday in the Week of the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

“For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Jesus’ call to discipleship and his warnings about self-deception among his present and would-be followers are sharp and urgent. His teaching is as burning and compelling a word for us today as it was then. While many throughout history, and even today, have affixed the word ‘Christian’ as an adjective to many causes and occupations, Jesus makes clear that discipleship to him is no mere accessory to life. It is principal. It is central. If one is rattled by this, perhaps because one has yet to fully explore for themselves what our Lord asks of his disciples, I want you to remember that Jesus is the one who gives himself over and over again as the way, the life, and the truth, “not wanting anyone to perish” (2 Peter 3.9). The truth of Jesus is never reduced to something separate from his very life or the way he calls us to follow today.

If you want to read the Bible daily with the Church, you can find a robust reading plan in the Daily Lectionary. Clergy at All Saints will be happy to show you how.

So excited to be back! See you soon? Much Love!
