Thanksgiving Day

When you enter the land, Moses says, don’t forget who carried you here.

by The Rev. F. Stuart Shelby on November 26, 2025

Thursday, November 27 • The Week of the Last Sunday after Pentecost • Thanksgiving Day • Deuteronomy 26.1-11

When you enter the land, Moses says, don’t forget who carried you here. When you offer up the first fruits of the land, tell the old story again. Tell all of it. Tell us about the wandering, the rescue, and the mercy that held when strength failed. On this Thanksgiving Day, we name our blessings not as trophies won but as gifts from the Giver who delivers His people from Pharaoh. He is always setting captives free. He raises the dead to new life. He has trampled down death by His own death at Calvary. He is making all things new. Whenever and wherever we gather to “say grace,” we find ourselves restored to our Most Gracious God who brings us home with joy.

Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
