“They do all their deeds to be seen by men.”

by The Rev. F. Stuart Shelby on December 10, 2025

Wednesday, December 10 • The Second Week of Advent • Seen • Matthew 23.1-12

“They do all their deeds to be seen by men.”

Jesus speaks into the old ache for applause and recognition. He says we dress ourselves up in all sorts of ways. Sacred costumes, success, leadership, service that’s more public than what He might have in mind for us, or something else. Doesn’t seem to matter. We try on lots of costumes. Yet Jesus invites us into the wild world of God’s grace where titles fall away and the soul can breathe. One’s true story of purpose and even adventure begins once we leave behind all the metrics related to public regard to follow our Master. Grace and all the lasting riches of this life meet us there. Greatness grows in humility as Christ uncovers our real selves with freeing gentleness.

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Liturgy for Life

Did you know you can find a guide for daily devotions in the Book of Common Prayer? Check it out, starting on page 136. There are prayers for married people that would make for a quick devotion over coffee or on a walk (BCP 429). You can find a grace to say before birthday cake as well as meals (BCP 830, 835). You can find a prayer of dedication for newborns or adoptions (BCP 439).

Need a Prayer Book? We have them in the pews. You can borrow one. You can also find your own in All Saints Gift Shoppe. Don’t hesitate to ask any of your clergy how to use it.
