At the Apocalypse

“A mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, ‘So shall Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and shall be found no more…”

Wednesday, November 12 • The Week of the Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost • At the Apocalypse • Revelation 18.21-24

“A mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, ‘So shall Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and shall be found no more…”

The warning of the angel’s millstone couldn’t be any more explicit. The angel’s millstone sinks into the sea with the weight of Babylon’s illusions, that is, with every last one of our glittering idols and self-made heavens. The music stops. The merchants weep. And beneath the silence, a truer song stirs. It is the Lord’s Day in the Revelation to John so we listen for the melody of the Lamb who sings a new creation ex nihilo while the powers of this age fashion flutes from the bones of His followers. God’s grace emerges where the grandeur of this world drowns, and love remains when empires fall. The end of this false light is not darkness, but dawn.
