About What Apostles and Preachers Say

“When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom.”

“When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom.”

Paul went to ancient Corinth, resolved to know nothing but Jesus Christ crucified. In 1 Corinthians 2.1–13, he says weakness has become the doorway to wisdom. The Spirit searches even the depths of God and shares that life with us as the gift it is. What has felt like a secret all this time is now made known. The Crucified Christ is God’s hidden glory, disclosed not to the clever ones but to the receptive ones.

Who are they? The receptive ones are rather noticeable. Look for their broken and contrite hearts. Listen for their songs of lament as well as their laughter. They are not out of touch, but their joy is otherworldly.

What the Apostle said to ancient Corinthians, the Holy Spirit says to you and me. We are invited into the mind of Christ, a participation rather than a possession. In prayerful attention, the Spirit tutors us, helps us see, really see, that was everyone else tags as foolish shines with everlasting splendor.

Without the Spirit revealing that to us, we’d never see it.

What’s more, our trembling hearts become temples where God’s Word touches down and is received with courage and joy.
